What The Twit Is Going On Here?

O.k. let me understand this. We have Facebook, MySpace, Zimbio, Linkedin and so many more social networking sites to join that “ohh my goodness do I really have time for another one”?. Lets face it, all of them are a free way to connect with others in your social network community. I myself have joined all of the above mentioned sites. So what is all the Twitter fuss about. What the twit is going on with Twitter? It has grown 1328% in the month of February alone to make it the fastest growing member community site on the internet. Lets take a quick look at twitter.
It all starts with Micro-blogging. Micro-blogging is a form of multimedia blogging. It allows its users to send short text updates or micromedia. You can publish photos, videos, audio or text messages. They can be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which is chosen by the user. They can be delivered by a variety of ways, including email, text messaging, instant messaging, or the web. Micro-blogging is done in “Real Time”. For that reason it can be used to let people know what you are doing at any given moment. This is where Twitter comes in to play.
Twitter was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey is an American software architect. Dorsey ne what he wanted to do with SMS text messaging. Jack built a prototype of twitter in two weeks. He saw the company grow tremendously by the end of 2008.
Twitter is a free social networking and Micro-blogging service. It allows its users to send messages that are up to 140 characters in length to each other. They are known as tweets. Tweeting is all text based and is sent in real time. The tweets are then displayed in the authors profile and are also seen by your followers who have been accepted by you to follow your tweets. The beauty of it is that you can control who sees your tweets. If you just want certain people to see your tweets then so be it. If you want all to see your tweets then you can allow open access.
Viewers are able to send and receive tweets in many ways. They can do it through the twitter website, SMS texting or an external application. I have my account set up so that when someone in my circle of friends tweets, I receive an SMS message in real time. Amazingly it is all free. There are no membership fees to sign up.
Twitter is most popular among working adults. Even with today’s economy, it continues to gain momentum. Knowing that Twitter is free and it continues to grow may provide Corporations with a new marketing strategy that they can control. They will be able to release news, answer questions, give tips and so much more without having to spend a dime in marketing. With today’s economy my bet is that twitter will change the PR business very soon. But hey you know what? That is another story in itself. I will save that for my next Post…
